Syskonen Ottosson from Edsäm

Children of Otto Julius Hansson and Hedda Emilie Andersdotter.

Amanda Justina Ottosson travels together with four other girls from Bullaren. The others are, Johanna Gustafva Hansson, 17 years old from South Naverstad, and Hanna Teresa Gädda, 20 years old, from Tyft. These three are going to Edward Jackson, New York. The other two are Hildur Amanda Johansson, 16 years old, from Hovsäter, and Eva Mathilda Emanuelsson (Olsson) 19 years old. Eva is going to Otto Olsson in New York, and Hildur Amanda is going to Monona, Iowa. The ship ”Umbria” arrives in New York on October 21, 1900.

Amanda married Karl Emanuelsson from Tanum in New York.

Two of their children are born there, Hulda 1905 and Oscar 1907. They return to Bullaren in 1913, and Amanda is pregnant at the time.

In Sweden the following children are born, Hildur, Frida, Johan, Hanna, Knut and Hildegard.

The family lived at Påderöd.

Karl Hilmer leaves Bullaren when he is 21 years old.  He arrives in New York on the ship Celtic, and is going to his sister Anna (Johanna Kristina).  Karl was back to Bullaren for a visit but he returned to the US with the ship Furnessia on April 2, 1905.  Karl married Annie, a girl from Ireland.  There were no children in that marriage.

This is one of Amandas and Karls children, Hulda or Oscar.

Johanna Kristina is 19 years old when she arrives in New York, Oct 13, 1896. She married a man from Stockholm, Emil Svensson, and they have two daughters, Elsa and Virginia.

On the picture to the right you can see Elsa. She was very beautiful and even won a beauty contest. Her sister Virgina had an accident when she was trying to untie a shoestring, she used a fork, but hit one of her eyes and was blind in that eye. After that she had an artificial eye.

Hans Ottosson leaves the first time in 1906 with the ship Invernia. He arrives in New York on May 6, and is going to his brother Charly Hansen. Hans lived in the Bronx, worked as a carpenter and was involved in building skyscrapers. He never talked much about his time in the US, but he told one story to a grandchild. When he was working on the twelfth floor a cat appears, the cat fell down but survived. This is something a child remembers.

He was home for a short period and he bought Håbäckemossen as a guarantee for the future. He went back to the US in 1908, and during this period he was working his way across the country to the west coast. He did some boxing to earn money when it was needed. He returned to Sweden in 1919, bought a farm at Jaren and married Torborg Andersson from Svenseröd in Lur. They later moved to Fagerhult.

The information about the Ottosson family comes from Viviann Johansson of Fagerhult. Hans Ottosson was Vivianns grandfather.
