Astrid Malkolmsson from Nedre Buane

Astrid departed Sweden in late June 1928 via Göteborg, and arrived in

New York on July 1, 1928. This was the day before her 21st.

Birthday. She was born 2 July 1907, and departed Sweden on the ship

Gripsholm. Her sponser in America was a Miss. Kristina Olson, a

maternal aunt of Roy Malkomson my cousin from Ostad. Miss Olson met

Astrid at the boat on arrival in New York and helped Astrid find a

place to live and work.

Astrid Malkomsson on her 99th Birthday on 2 of July 2006

Initially Astrid worked as a cook, chamber maid, and took care of

children primarily for the very well to do people in New York city.

Her work took her to the country in upstate New York, New Jersey and

Long Island during the family vacations, but primarily she lived in

New York city most of the time.

She married Gustav Adolf Anderson in 1937, whom she met in the USA.

He was originally from the area around Stockholm, and had also

immigrated to America in 1924. She was married in Sweden at the

Naverstad church with her Swedish family in attendance. She has two

children Gustav, (born 1939) and Carl, (born 1944) and three

grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her husband of 29 years

passed away at age 64 in 1965.

During her married life she and her husband and children lived in

Greenlawn, New York which is on Long Island. Her children grew up in

Greenlawn leaving their home there in 1961 (Gustav) and 1962 (Carl) to

serve time in the military. After her husbands death she continued to

live in her home in Greenlawn until 1977, when she sold her home and

moved to a smaller apartment also in Greenlawn. She lived there from

that time until moving to Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 to stay with her

son Carl and his wife Eileen.

During her years in Greenlawn after her husband's death in 1965, she

helped with home care, took care of children and worked full time in a

Nursing Home. She lived close to her oldest son Gustav and his family

whom she visited regularly from 1966 thru 2003. Her youngest son Carl

who remained in the military (US Air Force) lived in many other

countries and states some of which Astrid visited over the years.

Through her work with other families she has a number of additional

grown up children that she took care of, some from infancy to

teenagers that now still refer to her lovingly as Grandmother.

Although she has had many Swedish friends here in the USA over the

years, none other than Miss Olson whom she originally came to were

from Bullaren. Astrid just celebrated her 99th Birthday on 2 July of

this year. She is in good health and has a very vivid recollection of

her early days in Bullaren and has had a very interesting life full of

many exciting developments and experiences which she can share with

anyone so interested.
